What can be done to reduce moss?

The first thing to do is to try to identify the cause of the moss problem.

If it is due to shade from trees, it is possible to remove lower branches or thin out the tree. If it is due to excessive moisture, then hollow tine aeration will help to improve the surface drainage. If thatch is the problem then deep scarification is what is required.

One of the easiest ways to reduce the incidence of moss is to prevent the lawn from getting long over the winter months. Grass rarely stops growing in the winter nowadays so it is important to continue cutting it.

Dealing with the moss that is already there is the next issue.

As moss develops from the autumn through to spring, it is important to treat it at these two times, firstly in autumn, but most importantly in the spring when moss is likely to be at its most prevalent.

We will treat the moss problem with a specially formulated product; by doing so we will not only reduce the vigour of the moss but we will apply our lawn feed which will encourage the turf.

If required, we will then remove the dead moss by scarification giving the grass plants the opportunity to grow through and dominate the area again.

Why have I got weeds in my lawn?

Weed seeds will be carried into a lawn from a number of different sources; from birds over head, cats, dogs or other mammals that roam freely or from the people carrying them on their clothes or footwear.

A seed will develop into a full blown weed if left unchecked. Some weeds, such as Lesser Trefoil, are low growing and will be unaffected by the action
of a lawn mower and so spread until dominating a lawn.

There are many types of lawn weeds, or broadleaved weeds as they are sometimes referred to, and they can leave a lawn looking very unsightly indeed. They tend to produce flowers and seed heads at different times of the year ruining the uniform green of a lush, well maintained lawn.

Weeds are generally, as with moss, an indicator of a weak turf but they can even be a problem in a well maintained and established lawn. They are usually easier to eradicate than moss.

We use a herbicide that has more than one active ingredient and so will kill a broad range of lawn weeds.

We are usually able to reduce by more than 70% the amount of common weeds in your lawn.

Weeds are best treated when they are actively growing, which is usually any time from April through to June and then again in September and October.

Hand weeding can be a very difficult task and in some cases, such as dandelion, can actually worsen the weed problem. Some are a little more troublesome but we are confident that we are able to correctly identify them and reduce or control your lawn weed problem completely.

What else can be done to reduce the impact of drought?

A few things can be done to lessen the impact of drought stress and these include:-

1. Hollow tine aeration or spiking will greatly aid the speed and depth of penetration of moisture into the turf when rain is imminent or irrigation is used. Greensleeves can carry out this operation.

2. Greensleeves feed will greatly speed the rate of recovery and the return to a lush green grass cover when applied.

The ideal time to carry out renovation is usually in the autumn when the weather changes and moisture is available again. This may be crucial to ensure the lawn will fully recover from drought but also make it more drought resistant for the following year.

Hollow tine aeration, whilst helping rain to percolate through the soil and provide a bed for over-seeding areas that have been completely lost due to the extended dry period, is essential to provide a complete grass cover again.

These operations are critical to prevent moss invading the lawn over winter and weakening the grass further prior to next spring.

What can be done to maintain a green lawn?

Mowing Height
It is very important to increase the height at which the mower cuts the lawn – The higher the better! This will avoid putting the lawn under more pressure and weakening the turf, it will avoid scalping, reduce moisture loss and maintain a far greener and healthier looking lawn through the summer.
Watering
If you wish to retain a green lawn you will need to apply water, this should be done when the soil becomes dry, but before the grass becomes pale or brown.
How often and how much should you water?
If there is no rain, the lawn should be watered at least once a week. It is best to water heavily to allow real penetration into the soil rather than “little and often” which encourages shallow rooting and a weaker plant.
